Westford’s water-resource decision can limit the whole route

The Westford regulations define steep slopes using a grade of 25 percent or more over an area of at least 1,000 square feet, with the stated cumulative and measurement provisions. To classify the clearing route, the Westford definition divides rise by horizontal run over at least 25 feet and gives a separate six-foot elevation-gain provision for shorter areas. Have the designer apply the complete definition to a clearing route rather than importing Milton’s different disturbance threshold.

For a Westford illustration, 6.25 feet of rise over 25 horizontal feet equals 25 percent. A 25-by-40-foot patch covers 1,000 square feet. Those dimensions illustrate parts of the definition; they do not establish that the patch may be disturbed.

Ask how the district and resource-overlay standards constrain the intended clearing and equipment approach.

A Westford conservation/WRO decision reproduced in the August 14, 2025 Selectboard packet limits clearing and ground manipulation to DRB-approved disturbance areas. It also excludes ledge and steep-slope disturbance in that project. This clearing limit belongs to the recorded Westford case; it does not authorize vegetation removal on other properties.

Obtain the decision that runs with your own parcel before the contractor marks a machine corridor.

Westford clearing quantities and the accepted finish

The same Westford case required avoiding disturbance between October 15 and April 15 unless an amendment or administrative approval allowed it and called for specified exposed ground to be stabilized within 48 hours after active construction ended. For clearing equipment, that condition means a winter-access preference cannot override the approved soil-disturbance schedule. Put the actual parcel’s dates and stabilization duties into the clearing proposal before arranging transport.

For a Westford quote, identify the retained vegetation on the approved drawing, the access route through the overlay and the location for chips or larger wood. Ask who submits a proposed change if wet ground makes that route impractical. An unapproved alternate lane can expand the disturbance beyond the decision even when it is the contractor’s easiest way to reach the work.
