The durable route follows terrain and manages water. Clearing the corridor is only one stage.

A durable woods trail is decided by two numbers written down before anything is cut: corridor width and overhead clearance. Everything else follows from what will use the route. Then the route itself follows the terrain rather than a line on a map, because the real work of a trail is managing water — a trail that runs straight down a slope becomes the stream that destroys it. Flag the route on foot, ideally in two different seasons, and expect the walked line to differ substantially from the one drawn on an aerial: aerials do not show wet seeps, ledge, or that the obvious line crosses a drainage three times. Clearing the corridor is one stage of building a trail, not the whole of it. Stream and wetland crossings are separately permitted work, and surfacing, grading and drainage structures are separate scopes that come after the corridor exists.

Sequence the project around verified information

Survey and approvals come before broad clearing. Open only the access, test area, trail, fence corridor, or building envelope the next step requires.

Mark retained features and write the material outcome, finish tolerance, exclusions, stop-work conditions, and change-order process.

Collect evidence from the property

Send one marked aerial, a map pin, a photo from the equipment approach, wide views from both directions, a close view of typical density, the largest stem beside a tape or familiar object, slope and wet-ground views, gates, turns, overhead clearance, and anything the machine must avoid.

The sequence, in order

  1. Decide who uses it and write down the width and overhead height.
  2. Walk and flag the route on the ground, not on an aerial.
  3. Walk it again in a wetter season and move the flags that need moving.
  4. Mark every drainage crossing as a separate decision.
  5. Clear the corridor.
  6. Walk it after the first heavy rain and fix the two or three problem spots.

The order is the useful part. Every one of the failures in the next section is a step from this list taken out of sequence or skipped entirely.

What goes wrong

  • Flagging from an aerial.
  • Running the trail down the fall line.
  • Treating clearing as the whole trail.
  • Crossing a stream without asking whether that needs a permit.
