Wire is the specific hazard for a mulching drum — it wraps, and getting it off is hours of downtime and sometimes a replacement head. Stone walls are both a machine hazard and, in this region, frequently a heritage feature and a boundary marker worth preserving intact. So the sequence is detection before production: walk the row with a metal detector and flag every hit, mark the wall alignment, and have the owner establish the limit of work. Where the line is uncertain, disputed, or falls within the width of the machine, a surveyor comes before the mulcher — timber trespass carries multiplied statutory damages in all three states.

Sequence the project around verified information

Survey and approvals come before broad clearing. Open only the access, test area, trail, fence corridor, or building envelope the next step requires.

Mark retained features and write the material outcome, finish tolerance, exclusions, stop-work conditions, and change-order process.

Collect evidence from the property

Send one marked aerial, a map pin, a photo from the equipment approach, wide views from both directions, a close view of typical density, the largest stem beside a tape or familiar object, slope and wet-ground views, gates, turns, overhead clearance, and anything the machine must avoid.

The sequence, in order

  1. Do not put a machine in the row first.
  2. Detector sweep and flag everything.
  3. Photograph the wall and mark its alignment.
  4. Establish the boundary where it is uncertain.
  5. Decide what happens to the wire that gets found.
  6. Set a corridor width that can be maintained.
